The Baltic Sea coast of Denmark and Sweden<\/p>\n

The Baltic Sea is an inland sea of the North Atlantic Ocean and forms coastlines of a number of northern European countries, including Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. It connects to the North Atlantic Ocean through the North Sea and a series of waterways, including the Danish straits (also called the \u201cBelts\u201d), the Kattegat, and the Skagerrak. It comprises a number of bays and gulfs, including the Gulf of Finland, the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea, and the Gulf of Bothnia, its northernmost aspect.<\/p>\n

The Baltic is a realm of exquisite beauty, featuring a variety of natural coastal features. The coast and areas directly inland boast a wide array of architectural delights, from weathered stone castles to cutting-edge modern structures.<\/p>\n

The Baltic Sea is one of the most economically important bodies of water in the world. More than 70,000 ships pass through the sea each year, and some of Europe\u2019s most important ports are on the Baltic, including those of Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Helsinki.<\/p>\n

The Baltic Coast of Denmark &amp; Sweden Bush Trip visits some of the very best that this region has to offer, traversing coastal lands of Denmark and Sweden. It begins with a journey along the Belts of the sea\u2019s western margin and forges a path up to the coast of its northernmost arm.<\/p>\n

After lifting off from Esbjerg Airport, set a course to the south-southeast, paralleling the coast and remaining inland of the shoreline.<\/p>\n

Denmark has a rich maritime heritage, with Danish seafaring lineage dating back to the age of the Vikings. Esbjerg, located on the North Sea in the southwestern corner of Northern Jutland, is exemplary of this legacy. The city has Denmark\u2019s largest fishing port and its harbor is one of the largest in all of Europe.<\/p>\n

Gain a visual on the intersection of Highways 11 and 24 and follow the merged roadway south to the city of Ribe. Ribe is located on the Ribe River, 4 miles inland of the North Sea coast. Founded in the eighth century as a trading center by Vikings, Ribe is Denmark\u2019s longest continuously inhabited city.<\/p>\n

Sight the southwest corner of Ribe and then gain a visual on Ribe Cathedral, which lies just to the southwest of a bridge over the Ribe River. The cathedral is easily identified by its 171-foot-tall, red brick \u201cCommoner\u2019s Tower.\u201d Founded in 860 during the Viking Era, it was the country\u2019s first Christian church. The cathedral has experienced numerous catastrophic events throughout its history and has been repeatedly restored. Historians consider it to be the best preserved Romanesque structure in Denmark, and it comprises numerous architectural styles due to the number of times it has been rebuilt.<\/p>\n

Ribe Cathedral(POI1) to Marsk Camp and Tower(POI2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

From Ribe Cathedral, turn to the south and follow the course of national road 11 and the railway that roughly parallels the highway. Gain a visual on the town of Sk\u00e6rb\u00e6k, just south of the intersection of national road 11 and country road 175. Cross over to the west side of national road 11 just north of the intersection and sight Marsk Camp and Tower on the far western side of Sk\u00e6rb\u00e6k.<\/p>\n

Marsk Tower is a an 82-foot-tall observation tower comprised of a double spiral staircase structure. Located just a few miles inland of the North Sea, the tower grants long-distance views of Wadden Sea National Park, the largest national park in Denmark (outside of Greenland). The Wadden Sea is part of the North Sea and is visited by millions of migrating birds each year.<\/p>\n

Marsk Camp and Tower(POI2) to Tonder(POI3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adjust heading to a south-southeast course and parallel national road 11 to the town of T\u00f8nder. The town is located at the confluence of the Gr\u00f8n\u00e5 and the Vid\u00e5 rivers, one mile north of Denmark\u2019s border with Germany. The town is renowned for its well-preserved late 17th and early 18th century houses which were built during a local boom in lace production, when \u201cT\u00f8nder lace\u201d was introduced.<\/p>\n

Turn to the east over T\u00f8nder and follow the course of national road 8 to the town of Tinglev. Maintain heading and pass just to the south of the towns of Kliplev and Kv\u00e6rs. Gain a visual on Nyb\u00f8l Nor, a small bay to the north of Flensburg Firth, the westernmost inlet of the Baltic Sea. The town of Gr\u00e5sten is located on the western shore of Nyb\u00f8l Nor. Gr\u00e5sten Palace, renowned as the summer residence of the Danish royal family, is located on the western edge of town along the shore of Gr\u00e5sten Slotss\u00f8, the largest of a line of lakes to the west of Gr\u00e5sten.<\/p>\n

Cross the island of Als, known for its agriculture production, and then pass over the water of the Little Belt strait to reach \u00c6r\u00f8 island. \u00c6r\u00f8 island is part of the South Funen Archipelago, a chain of more than 50 small islands. \u00c6r\u00f8 (\u201cmaple\u201d), which boasts numerous archaeological remnants more than 10,000 years old, has no bridge connection and is therefore accessible only by ferry.<\/p>\n

Turn to the southeast and fly along the eastern shoreline of \u00c6r\u00f8 to the town of Marstal at the island\u2019s southeastern extremity. The largest town on \u00c6r\u00f8, Marstal has a maritime lineage that dates to the 16th century. The town is known for its shipbuilding, and is home to the Marstal Maritime museum, which celebrates this craft.<\/p>\n

Turn to the east and fly over the northern extremity of Marstal Bay to the island of Langeland, \u201clong land.\u201d The island, which measures 31 miles long by 5 miles at its widest, is known for its agricultural productivity and is a popular tourist destination.<\/p>\n

Slot\u00f8, a tiny island just offshore of Nakskov in the Nakskov Fjord, was the site of Denmark\u2019s first naval dockyard, built in the 16th century. Shipbuilding maintained a cherished position of importance in the Nakskov area for centuries. In the period of 1920 to 1987, Nakskov shipbuilders produced over 200 vessels, including the renowned sailing ship Danmark, which is used for maritime training.<\/p>\n

Gain a visual on the narrow strait Guldborgsund. Guldborgsund separates the island of Lolland, to the west, from Falster, to the east. Pass over Guldborgsund at the location of the bridge on its northern end at the town of Guldborg.<\/p>\n

Continue on course, flying over the northern aspect of Falster. The island, like Lolland, is known for its agriculture, notably sugar beets. Geographically, it is mostly flat, and holds the distinction of having Denmark\u2019s southernmost land point.<\/p>\n

Maintaining course, gain a visual on Storstr\u00f8mmen, a strait that separates the island of Falster from the island of Zealand. The two islands are connected by the Far\u00f8 Bridges by way of the small island of Bog\u00f8. Flying past the bridge system provides a great perspective of this engineering feat, which was completed in 1984. The south bridge is 5,663 feet long and the north bridge is 5,236 feet in length.<\/p>\n

Faro Bridges(POI11) to Camp Adventure Observation Tower(POI12)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turn to the north at the Far\u00f8 Bridges and pass over the southern portion of Zealand, Denmark\u2019s most populous island (Copenhagen, Denmark\u2019s capital, is located in northeastern Zealand). Parallel European route 47, passing just to the west of Pr\u00e6st\u00f8 Fjord and over the village of Tappern\u00f8je. Gain a visual on the intersection of E47 and national road 54. The Camp Adventure Observation Tower, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, is located just to the southwest of the intersection.<\/p>\n

Adjust heading to a northeasterly course and pass just to the north of Faxe Kalkbrud, the Faxe Limestone Quarry. Sight the Vivede M\u00f8lle\u00e5 stream and the hamlet of Gannebro just to its east, which lies on the western edge of Zealand\u2019s Stevns Peninsula.<\/p>\n

Midway across the \u00d8resund, pass into Sweden, and sight the town of Skan\u00f6r at the western tip of the Falsterbo Peninsula. Skan\u00f6r and its neighboring village of Falsterbo are two of Sweden\u2019s oldest towns. They served as historically important marketplaces between the 12th and 16th centuries.<\/p>\n

Follow the coast to the east, passing over Trelleborg. Trelleborg is the southernmost town in both Sweden and the Scandinavian Peninsula. It is a vital logistical hub due to its large ferry terminal that connects Sweden to a number of key cities in Germany, Poland, and Russia. Trelleborg is the site of a partially reconstructed Viking ring fortress, the only one of its kind in Sweden.<\/p>\n

Set an east-northeast heading at Trelleborg and fly above vast sweeps of rich agriculture land. This part of Sweden, Sk\u00e5ne County, is called the \u201cgranary of Sweden\u201d due to the numerous crops grown here, including wheat, potatoes, and sugar beets. Pass by a series of pastoral villages, including S\u00f6dra \u00c5by and Vallby. Smygehuk, the southernmost point in Sweden and the Scandinavian Peninsula, lies due south of Vallby.<\/p>\n

Maintaining course, rejoin the coastline near the town of Svarte, then follow the shoreline to the town of Ystad, a key ferry port.<\/p>\n

Turn to the southeast and cut across a small bay to K\u00e5seberga, home to \u201cAle\u2019s Stones,\u201d a large megalithic monument by the sea. The stone laying is composed of 59 large boulders, each weighing up to 10,000 pounds, arranged in a large oval. Archaeologists who study Ale\u2019s Stones estimate the age of the formation to be 1,400 years.<\/p>\n

Follow the coast from K\u00e5seberga, passing by Hagestad and Sandhammarens nature reserves, which together protect a long stretch of coastal dunes. Continue to the northeast, following the coastline, and pass the maritime communities of Skillinge and then Brantevik, which have historic ties to the shipping industry. Continue following the coastline to the picturesque town of Simrishamn.<\/p>\n

Located directly south of town, the Aspet Nature Reserve protects dunes, small stands of forest, and bird habitat.<\/p>\n

From \u00c5hus, turn to the west and sight Hammarsj\u00f6n Lake. Pass south of the lake and gain a visual on Kristianstad Airport and touch down, ending this leg of the journey.<\/p>\n

Take off and set a course to the north-northeast. Gain a visual on Hammarsj\u00f6n Lake, which is protected by Kristianstad Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The Helge River flows into the northern extremity of Hammarsj\u00f6n Lake, and the Vattenriket Nature Center is located on the river\u2019s western shore just west of the southern end of the city of Kristianstad. The reserve, which protects a number of wetland habitats, is one of the most visited reserves in Sweden and is the nation\u2019s oldest UNESCO biosphere reserve.<\/p>\n
