Southern England is a sub-national area of England located in the southern portion of the island of Great Britan. Also called South of England, Southern England is defined by distinct cultural traits heavily influenced by London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom.

Geographically, Southern England is bordered to its north by the Midlands, the central portion of England, and is bounded by the Celtic Sea on its west, the English Channel on its south, and the North Sea’s Southern Bight on its east. Southern England is predominantly low-lying, with several ranges of rolling hills including the Mendip Hills and North Wessex Downs.
